Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the club shoot?

We have a full-sized outdoor range next to the Riverdale Scout Hall. We shoot outdoors during the evenings over summer, and also on Sunday mornings all year round.

Indoor shooting is generally held at other locations around Palmerston North, as per the schedule on the Practice page. The scout hall is also used for indoor shoots from time to time, and is also the location for our Beginners courses.

Our last two indoors competitions have been held at the Manfield Stadium in fielding. It's a huge indoor space.

Is Manawatu Archery Club part of any larger organizations?

The M.A.C. is affiliated with the Wellington Archery Association, and with Archery New Zealand. Most M.A.C. members join the WAA, and many also join ANZ in order to take part in the competition calendars of those organizations.

Who manages the web-site?

Jonathan Couper-Smartt manages the site. If you're a club member with information to contribute, contact him and ask him to post the information, or ask him to give you a website login so that you can do it yourself.

Who can shoot?

Archery is one of the most inclusive sports in the world. Age is no barrier - lightweight bows allow pretty much any kid to shoot, while the emphasis on skill and experience (rather than brute strength) means that veteran archers can shoot competitively. Women and men are ranked separately, though the difference in scores is minimal.

Is Archery an expensive sport?

If you're looking to try things out, come along to one of our Beginners courses, where all the gear is provided. If you like it and decide to join the club, you can normally purchase a basic beginner's recurve bow and arrows for somewhere in the $200 (second hand) up to around $400 (new) range. Of course, if you plan to join the Olympic team, you'll be looking to spend quite a bit more…

Are New Zealand Archers any good?

Are you kidding? The NZ Women's Compound team took first place in the 2009 World Cup Stage 3 Finals in Turkey. The Men's Compound team came second in the 2009 World Cup Stage 4 Finals in Shanghai. Check out the Archery New Zealand website for the latest success stories.

Palmerston North isn't short of talent either. Our very own woman's recurve archer Amanda Biggs-Hume represented New Zealand in the 2009 World Champs round in Turkey, is currently the North Island Champ, and was the 2009 NZ Champion.

Does MAC have any Collectible Archery Badges?

Sorry, all the badges that our club offers are only given as rewards for shooting.

The only “collectible” Archery badge in New Zealand that I'm aware of is the NZ Archery Pin, shown here. This is available to anybody who wishes to purchase one. If you want one, you need to contact the Secretary of Archery New Zealand and arrange payment.

Are There any Broken Links on this Site?
